Waking up more than once a night to wee is called nocturia and it can be a sign that your bladder, kidneys, or other parts of your body that control the flow of wee are not working correctly. Weeing often overnight can be caused by medical conditions so it is important to see your doctor and get checked out. Once medical conditions have been ruled out, you can work with a nurse continence specialist or pelvic floor physiotherapist to help you train your bladder. This is important because waking frequently in the night can drastically reduce your quality and amount of sleep, leading to sleep deprivation, which can contribute to behavioural problems in children and falls, car accidents, depression and anxiety in older people.

For more information about nocturia call the National Continence Helpline.
