Incontinence is a manageable condition, and with the right support, people can maintain confidence, independence and quality of life. A little planning can make daily life easier at home, work and in the community.

Using the toilet at home

Feeling safe and confident at home is important, especially when managing bladder or bowel control changes. With the right setup, it’s easier to move around, reduce stress and stay independent.

Sometimes, getting to the toilet in time can be hard, whether due to mobility (movement) challenges, disability or needing to rush. This can be stressful and can increase the risk of falls.

Simple changes can help you or someone you care for feel more supported, for example:

  • use a raised toilet seat and handrails
  • add a foot stool (if safe) for better posture
  • keep the toilet area clean, warm and well-lit
  • remove clutter such as bathmats or rugs
  • consider an outward-opening door for safety.

If getting to the toilet is hard, other helpful options include:

  • commodes – portable chairs with built-in pans, and some have wheels and brakes
  • handheld urinals – special bottles where urine (wee) can be collected where you are (eg a bed or chair), which can save you needing to move to the toilet.

Prepare before you go out

Feeling prepared when out and about is key to living well. For those managing incontinence, caring for others or planning a day out, knowing where accessible toilets are located helps maintain independence and confidence.
