Living well with incontinence

Plan before you travel

Practical tips to help you or someone you care for feel more prepared.

Travel should be enjoyable, whether for leisure or need. With planning, people managing incontinence can feel confident and fully participate in activities they enjoy.

Here are some practical tips to help you or someone you care for feel more prepared:

In the weeks before you go

  • see your doctor 6 to 8 weeks before travel to talk about travel plans, medicines and continence needs
  • pack prescription medicines and continence products in their original packaging when travelling overseas
  • search online to see if you can buy products at your destination so you don’t have to take as much in your luggage
  • book early and ask for aisle seats or seats near toilets.

When you’re packing

  • bring extra continence products and ask about extra luggage allowances if needed
  • carry a small toilet kit with wipes, spare clothes, spare pads and essentials
  • wear dark, easy-to-remove clothes such as elastic-waist pants or long tops.

During travel

  • drink enough water and don’t reduce fluids to avoid leaking as this can make symptoms worse
  • eat light meals that are easy to digest
  • avoid coffee, alcohol, fizzy drinks and spicy or acidic foods if these make your symptoms worse
  • move regularly to help with circulation and digestion.
