My Continence Care - aged care learning

My Continence Care – Residential

Professional development for people providing continence care in residential aged care.

My Continence Care™ is Continence Health Australia’s values-led education program for the residential aged care workforce.

Designed as a business-as-usual learning offering, it equips staff with the confidence, skills and practical strategies to deliver continence care that protects dignity, enhances wellbeing and supports residents to live with greater comfort.

Empowering aged care through dignified, person-centred continence support.

About the program

Created specifically for direct care staff, this non-clinical, strengths-based program builds core capabilities in:

  • delivering individualised, respectful continence care
  • understanding the why, what and how of person-centred support
  • using practical strategies that easily integrate into daily routines.

Learning is supported through relatable characters, real care scenarios and team based “Continence Conversations” that encourage shared problem solving and reflection.

What makes ‘My Continence Care – Residential’ different

My Continence Care goes beyond task-based continence training, focussing on:

  • empathy and communication in sensitive care situations
  • scenario based, practical learning aligned to real aged care environments
  • team led reflection to strengthen consistent, person-centred care approaches.

“After almost 20 years in aged care, I’ve never experienced training like this. It reminded me of the human, empathetic factors we often overlook.”
Pilot participant, rural Victoria

Why the program matters

Consultation with aged care providers, registered training organisations (RTOs) and tertiary educators highlighted a significant gap: current qualifications do not adequately prepare staff to deliver holistic continence care.

My Continence Care addresses this by building the confidence, empathy and everyday strategies staff need to provide respectful, person-centred continence care, while giving teams practical ways to learn, reflect and problem solve together for more consistent, dignified support.

Proven impact for staff, residents and teams

Independent evaluation of the 5-month pilot program demonstrated clear, measurable improvements across 11 aged care sites:

Outcomes for staff

  • 98% gained a stronger understanding of best practice, dignified continence care
  • 99% applied their learning in daily practice
  • 90% reported no barriers to implementing new strategies.

Outcomes for residents and teams

  • care plans updated with more personalised, dignified strategies
  • increased staff confidence and collaboration
  • greater involvement of the person receiving care and their support people in care decisions.

Pilot at a glance

  • 936 enrolments
  • 525 online module completions (56%)
