The website aims to conform to Level AA of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities or special needs. Conforming to these guidelines will help make the website more user friendly for all users.
Continence Health Australia strives to adhere to the accepted guidelines and standards for accessibility and usability, however it is not always possible to do so in all areas of the website.

Use of PDF documents
PDF documents are used in this website which may be difficult to access using assistive technology. Where possible, we have provided an alternative version in HTML formats. To read PDFs you need a PDF viewer which you can download for free from Adobe. If you need an accessible Word or HTML document, contact us or call the National Continence Helpline on 1800 33 00 66.
Adjusting text size
You can make the text size on this website larger or smaller using the following keyboard commands.
Hold down the CTRL (Microsoft Windows) or the ‘Apple’ key (Mac) on your keyboard.
Use the + or – key, or scroll with your mouse to make the text bigger or smaller.
Tab-based navigation
This website has been designed to allow navigation using a keyboard alone.
To navigate the site with just a keyboard:
- press the ‘tab’ key to move through links and interactive elements on the page.
- hold the ‘shift’ key while pressing the ‘tab’ key to move in reverse order.
- press enter to select highlighted text.
The website has a main menu of items (eg. About incontinence, Resources) and each of these menu items has its own sub menu.
- When on a main menu item or link, pressing enter will take the user to that page which will have its own sub menu.
- Pressing ‘enter’ on the sub menu will take the user to that page.
- Holding down ‘shift’ as you tab will take the user through tab order in reverse order.
- ‘Skip to Content’ and ‘Skip to Navigation’ links are provided for keyboard users to directly skip to the main content areas of the website. Please note that Skip to Content and Skip to Navigation links are invisible on the site but they can be tabbed to.
Breadcrumbs
Breadcrumbs are included on this site just above the content on the web page. These are a series of links which show the trail back to the home page of the current section.
Headings
The website uses headings to provide the webpage a structure which allows easy navigation using tabs and screen readers.
Hyperlinks
Where possible, hyperlinks have meaningful link text which can be read by screen readers.
Images and graphics
All images and graphics include meaningful descriptive ‘alt’ tags which can be read by screen readers.
Multimedia
Audio files can be listened to using the embedded media player or downloaded in MP3 format, which requires the use of software on your computer which can play MP3 audio files. YouTube videos also feature on the website. All videos have closed captions for people with hearing difficulties.
Readspeaker text to speech tool
ReadSpeaker page reading software is available on this site. ReadSpeaker allows the text on the website to be read out loud to you. It helps if you find it hard to read text online. As a user you don’t have to download anything.
To listen to the main content
Click on the Text to Speech icon in the side panel of the page, and the Listen button will appear. You can click or press the button to listen to the webpage’s content:

An audio player appears (see image below) and ReadSpeaker starts reading the text of the webpage out loud.

In the player you can:
- Pause/restart the reading
- Stop the reading
- Use the progress bar to navigate in the audio
- Adjust the volume
- Click the settings icon to adjust the behaviour of the service
- Click the download icon to download the audio file
- Close the player
You can click tab/shift+tab together to navigate inside the player, and press enter to activate a certain button or link.
To listen to selected text
You can select a part of the text that you want to listen to and then press the pop-up Listen button that appears next to the mouse pointer. When you click the pop-up Listen button, an audio player appears (see the image below) and ReadSpeaker starts reading the text you have selected.

To manage settings
In the settings menu, you can choose whether to:
- have the text highlighted while read
- highlight the text on a word and sentence basis, sentence only, or word only
- display the current sentence at the bottom of the page, with a larger font size and text highlighting together
- set the reading speed to slow, medium or fast
- allow the page to scroll automatically to follow the highlighted text
- show the pop-up Listen button when text is selected
You can also:
- listen to the settings by clicking the Listen button at the top right of the Settings menu
- choose style and colours for the highlighting
- restore all settings to original default settings.
