How to use Toilet Tactics

When your school joins the Toilet Tactics program, the whole school community can have a positive impact on students.

Use our simple guide to help you get started.

1. Get started: Choose your champions

• Nominate a teacher or staff lead (eg student wellbeing coordinator, school council teacher, etc) to champion Toilet Tactics
• Form a student group (eg student council or interested students) to help lead projects.

2. Spread the word

Build awareness across your school community with the help of our resources.

• Share updates in your school newsletter
• Make announcements at assemblies
• Send out the family newsletter article
• Let families know they can find information at Helping your child use school toilets.

3. Engage staff and students

Get everyone involved!

• Share relevant resources from the Teacher section
• Incorporate Healthy Habits into lessons
• Use our resources to add fun activities like:
  • Crossword
  • Word search
  • Spot the difference.

Make it fun and visible!

4. Promote healthy habits

• Use the Healthy Habits poster:
  
  • display it in toilets
    
  • include it in the newsletter
• Reinforce messages through classroom learning.

5. Assess your toilets

Understand the current condition of your toilets by completing the School Toilet Checklist.

Repeat this assessment once each term to stay on track.

6. Listen to students

Gather real feedback.

• Ask students to complete the Student Survey. A student consent form is also available.
• You can distribute the survey:
  • as a classroom activity
  • to homes via newsletter
  • using Dropbox or Google Drive for responses.

7. Share and reflect

• Collate survey results using the template
• Share findings with the school community.

8. Take action

Improve what matters most.

• Review:
  • Toilet checklist results
  • Student survey feedback
• Identify priority improvements
• Use the tips to improve and maintain toilet standards.

9. Create your School Toilet Charter

• Develop your School Toilet Charter as a community
• Display it around the school
• Share it in newsletters.
