Tips to make toilet time relaxed

Practical ideas to help your child as they learn toilet skills plus ideas to help them feel calm during toilet time.

Some children need time to feel comfortable using the toilet. They might not want to go into the bathroom, or they might find it hard to sit still on the toilet.

Your child is most likely to do a wee or poo when:

  • their bladder or bowel is full
  • they’re sitting comfortably and safely
  • toilet time is calm and not rushed.

Help your child feel relaxed during toilet time

  • to begin, sit close by on a chair or stool to help your child feel supported
  • stay calm and encouraging – your presence helps
  • talk positively about wee and poo and going into the toilet
  • don’t rush – give your child time (2 to 5 minutes is enough)
  • don’t force them to stay sitting if they’re ready to get up.

Fun and calming ideas to try

During toilet time, you and your child could:

  • read a story book together
  • sing a favourite song or rhyme
  • play a counting game
  • let your child hold a favourite toy
  • give a gentle hand massage
  • take slow, deep breaths together
  • talk about the pictures on the wall.

Try to avoid using screens or devices during toilet time. It’s better to keep your child’s focus on their body.
Use simple reminders like:

“Let’s sit with a soft tummy and relaxed arms.”

“Try a big breath in and a long slow breath out.”

More calming tools for sensitive children

Some children feel more relaxed with sensory tools. You could try:

  • a nature app with water sounds (waves, rain etc)
  • soft gentle background music
  • mild scents (with a room spray or roll-on scent)
  • fidget toys
  • watching slow-moving visual objects (bubble timer, lava lamp)
  • a weighted cushion or wheat bag on their lap.
